A MAN remains in police custody having been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a 24-year-old arrived at hospital with a stab wound.

Stockton residents yesterday awoke to at least three police cordons, all within a half-a-mile radius of one another after an attempted murder investigation was launched by detectives.

Cleveland Police has confirmed a 24-year-old man remains in hospital in a stable condition following an alleged stabbing.

He presented himself at the University Hospital of North Tees with a stab wound at around 11.30pm on Wednesday and detectives from the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team were called.

A 22-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remained in police custody yesterday.

Police were yesterday guarding three areas in Stockton in Piper Knowle Road, behind Hardwick Shops off Whessoe Road and outside the hospital – where the injured victim is said to have arrived before midnight.

At the first location a house remained cordoned off and forensic officers were examining the scene. The window of the house was smashed and the cordon stretched across the street, blocking access for both pedestrians and motorists.

The forensic team was seen capturing photographs of the scene and gathering evidence.

Cleveland Police have called for anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage of the area at around 11.30pm on Wednesday night to come forward.

One horrified mum said she watched in the early hours of the morning as a car pulled up on Piper Knowle Road and a “lad on a bike”. She described hearing the back window of the car and the window to a property smashed as men argued in the street.

She claims one of the men pulled out a machete before a car made off from the scene.

A man on a pedal bike is then said to have shouted “war is coming” before riding off ahead of the first police officers arriving at the scene. She says her terrified son watched and shouted “mammy it’s a knife, it can kill you, it can kill you” as she tried to calm and reassure him.

Another resident said: “I heard shouting at around midnight and looked out and lads were stood shouting at someone in a house, it was back and forth.

“They’d go and come back a few minutes later. A lad on a bike turned up and a car and they were all arguing on the front and on the road. The car drove off and the lad on the bike started smashing the car up, then smashed the front room window.

“He was shouting ‘war is coming,’ it all went quiet after that. “Police arrived shortly after.” One neighbour added: “I was up for work at about 5am and came out and saw the police searching gardens, it was all taped off.”

The force has confirmed that officers are “preserving a number of possible scenes as part of their ongoing enquiries”.

Anyone with information, CCTV or dash cam footage from the area of Piper Knowle Road around 11.30pm on Wednesday is asked to call Cleveland Police on 101, quoting ref 117381 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
