A UNIVERSITY chancellor is due to step down after five years at the helm.

Teesside University’s chancellor, Paul Drechsler CBE, is to resign in July 2022, having served the full five years term of office in the role. The position of chancellor is held by a distinguished individual, who acts as a prominent ambassador for the university and is the ceremonial figurehead of the institution.

As the former president of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), and with a successful career in international business, Mr Drechsler has offered ongoing support for the university’s enterprise and business engagement activity, in particular strengthening international partnerships and advising on the strategic direction and growth of Teesside University International Business School.

The search for a new chancellor takes place as the university moves into a new phase of development and launches its new corporate strategy, Teesside 2027: Ambition Delivered Today.

Mr Drechsler said: “I have been delighted to serve as chancellor at Teesside University and to have had the opportunity to play a part in the growth of this ambitious institution. It is rewarding to see Teesside recognised for its high level of commitment to working in partnership with industry and a leading university for global business. As the university looks ahead to strategic developments across health and medicine, digital and net zero, it feels the right time to step down and to allow a new chancellor the privilege of being part of the university’s future successes.”

Professor Paul Croney OBE, vicechancellor and chief executive of Teesside University, said: “On behalf of Teesside University, I would like to thank the chancellor for his advice and insight over the past five years. His support in positioning Teesside as an entrepreneurial university with a global outlook has been appreciated, especially his ambassadorial work overseas.

“He leaves the university during a period of growth and with many exciting strategic developments on the horizon. I look forward to appointing a successor who will support the university’s ambitions and work in partnership with us to generate opportunity.”

It is anticipated that a new chancellor will be appointed during the next academic year.
