Thousands affected by burst water main
A BURST water main left homes in Eaglescliffe without water during soaring temperatures of over 30C.
The burst, which happened at around 2.30pm yesterday in Urlay Nook Way, affected 4,600 people in the area, with teams working to rezone pipes to ensure water could reach as many households as possible during the heatwave.
Those affected by the incident were left with discoloured water, low pressure or no water at all.
Although water has since been restored to most affected homes, Northumbrian Water Group said yesterday it was working with 30 households located in the close vicinity of the burst which were still facing issues.
Most supplies were back up and running by 5.30pm, and the 30 homes closest to the burst were expected to have problems until 9.30pm.
A traffic control vehicle was put in place with temporary traffic lights at the scene while repairs were carried out.
Shelves at the nearby Tesco supermarket were left empty of still water following the burst.
Northumbrian Water said yesterday: “We were made aware of a burst on a nine-inch water main at Urlay Nook Road in Eaglescliffe at around
2.30pm this afternoon.
“Our teams attended quickly and they have been working hard in the area to carry out a repair
“They have rezoned some of the water in the surrounding pipes in order to keep the water flowing for as many customers as possible, but some properties in the area may be experiencing low pressure, no water or discoloured water until around 5pm this afternoon.
“We appreciate the understanding that our customers have shown, and apologise that their supplies have been impacted during such hot weather. Be reassured that we are working as quickly as we can to get this resolved
“Any customers who are experiencing discoloured water are assured that this is safe to drink, and are advised to run the taps until the water runs clear.”
