Cooking up a new look for town’s famous pub
LANDMARK WATERING HOLE IS GIVEN A FRESH LEASE OF LIFE
ONE of Middlesbrough’s oldest surviving pubs has been brought back to life after undergoing a huge renovation.
The Captain Cook pub, an 180-year-old Grade II-listed building in Middlehaven, has gone through an extensive refurbishment programme after being named as one of the top ten Most Endangered Buildings by The Victorian Society.
It last served customers around a decade ago before closing its doors, and has been left in disrepair ever since.
The pub is an important remnant of the town’s history, located within seconds of the Transporter Bridge and in front of Middlesbrough’s old town hall.
It has also made its way on to the TV during its 180-year history – featuring in the classic comedy Auf Wiedersehen, Pet.
Middlesbrough Mayor Andy Preston urged those wanting to take over the pub once it is fully refurbished to contact Middlesbrough Council for more details.
He said: “Middlesbrough’s amazing old pub The Captain Cook is almost completely renovated.
“The painstaking and expensive refurbishment programme has preserved and restored one of our great pieces of Victorian architecture.
“Now there’s an opportunity for someone to use the building as an incredible base for a modern business in this 100% prime location – an area booming in regeneration.
“Middlesbrough Council are really keen to hear from people or organisations who might want to take the building on and do something great – all ideas welcome but only credible and financially strong plans can be considered.”
The mayor added he would like to see the building be busy “day and night, seven days a week” – suggesting it would be the perfect place for a pub/cafe/restaurant.
