£15m hotel plan for Bay revealed
A NEW multi-million pound hotel could be built in Scarborough’s popular North Bay on the site of a demolished swimming pool.
Nick Thomas MBE, a Yorkshire businessman who heads company Qdos Entertainment, has put forward £15m investment plans to build a four-star hotel on the plot of land, which will include 100 bedrooms as well as a bar, restaurant and meeting space.
The proposed hotel is expected to create 120 new jobs and contribute an extra £3.4m to the local economy.
If approved, the plans would be part of the North Bay masterplan – agreed to at a cabinet meeting at the start of July – which aims to improve facilities in the area.
Developers say the hotel would be considered complimentary to the overall vision for North Bay and would be the first significant piece of the plan to come to fruition.
The proposed hotel would mean the loss of some car parking.
It has, however, been advised this would be mitigated by making greater use of an overspill parking area opposite the site.
There is also potential for a multi-storey car park to be built on the former Atlantis site which would also compensate for any parking lost on Ryndle Crescent site.
Previous studies have highlighted a lack of higher-quality accommodation in Scarborough.
The hotel, pitched as a four-star ‘plus’ facility would be promoted as a destination venue which, Mr Thomas says, would not be in competition with nearby establishments.
The land housed the former indoor swimming pool until 2017, after which it closed following facilities being moved to the new sports village.
Permission was then granted to demolish the building in 2021 and work to clear the site began earlier this year.
Councillor Liz Colling, cabinet member for inclusive growth, said: “We have an exciting and ambitious vision for North Bay.
“Improving facilities for visitors and residents is central to future development and schemes which could help us achieve this are very welcome.”
