TEESSIDERS took a step back in time to the 1940s as part of a Second World War event.

The Heugh Battery Museum in Hartlepool organised the day, which involved a re-enactment group, and visitors were encouraged to dress in 1940s-style clothing. There was also a sing-along and equipment on show.

Based on the Headland in Hartlepool, the museum preserves the only First World War battlefield in the UK, telling the history of North East Bombardment. However, for their latest event they turned the clock forward to the Second World War.

Diane Stephens, manager of the museum, said: “The re-enactment group was the 4th Kompanie Grossdeutchlander and they were here giving drill presentations and talking to visitors about the equipment and weapons used by the German Army during World War Two. We had entertainment from the fabulous Yvonne the Vintage Vocalist, who had the crowd singing along to wartime tunes.”

During the event the museum also launched Joshua Gallantree’s book “Remnants of War”, which is a pictorial record of pill boxes and other defence buildings left over in the area from the war. The book is on sale, including signed copies, in the museum gift shop.

There will be more entertainment at the museum over the summer. It will include the Midsummer Evening Craft Fayre on Saturday, July 30, from 6pm to 9pm, where there will be merchandise made by artists and crafters.

And, on Saturday, August 20, from 10am to 4pm, the Heugh Battery will play host to a Napoleonic Wars event.

Visitors will have the chance to dress up like a Napoleonic soldier and hear what life was like once you had taken the king’s shilling and there will be displays from the East Indian Company

1st Battalion Bengal Grenadiers.

I must discard pork sausages,

Leave pizzas well alone. Cut down on carbohydrates,

And hope to lose a stone!

No more French fries with bacon,

Kick chocolate into touch.

Refrain from bread and butter,

Of which I eat too much!

Buying fruit and vegetables,

My diet starts today! No mayonnaise, no takeaways,

No bhajis from Bombay!

From now on I’ll tell myself,

It’s rabbit food for me! Lettuce, carrots, watercress,

With sticks of celery!

No more eating like a horse!

No burgers, no more pies.

I want to change the clothes I wear,

From large to smaller size.

Peanut butter, double cream,

I will no longer eat. My one-time guilty pleasures,

No more will I repeat!
