- By ANNA FERGUSON anna.ferguson@reachplc.com @TeessideLive

IT’S not a sport you would associate with babies and toddlers, but Michael Porter and his girlfriend, Giuliana Viglianisi, are going to prove people wrong.

The duo are the new Rugbytots franchise owners in the South Durham and Tees Valley area, which is being launched this September.

With classes available for girls and boys aged between 18 months and seven, the programme is designed specifically to make it fun for each age group.

The classes will be packed with energy, enthusiasm and excitement – creating a class atmosphere that is completely unique and engaging for parents and children.

The pair are working closely with modern venues in Hartlepool and Darlington, to deliver fun and engaging Rugbytot sessions to the local communities.

The motto is simple – “make it more fun”.

Rugbytots is the UK’s first rugby specifically designed play programme for young children, using the multiple skills of rugby to create a fun and enjoyable environment whilst developing basic core motor skills.

Each rugby class session aims to develop hand-eye coordination, balance and agility, as well as enhancing social and psychological attributes through a series of games and exercise.

Michael, from Sunderland, said: “Whilst in my role as a teacher of engineering, Gateshead College, and in my spare time as a Minis Rugby Coach, I understand the importance of creating a fun, safe learning environment.

“Upon my son turning six, I signed up to the minis section and I am currently lead coach.

“I am fully committed to inspiring young players to learn and develop their skills by providing sessions that make the game interesting, exciting and enjoyable.

“I was lucky as a young boy to have fantastic coaches that truly inspired me to play and develop within the sport of rugby.

“Looking back, I see now that their passion for the sport, their guidance and support was actually a gift – I was hooked. Rugby has been a part of my life for over 35 years.”

The 42-year-old added: “I believe Rugbytots has a legitimate role in the development of young children, and has a firm understanding of what parents want for their kids.

“Rugbytots’ ‘Fun First’ programme creates fun, meaningful experiences, promotes and develops core rugby skills and at the same time meets important pre-school learning objectives, creating fantastic opportunities for children and families to experience the game of rugby while learning.

“It is this philosophy which has been reflected throughout my teaching and coaching and I wholeheartedly believe in.”

Official Rugbytots class application/registration is available online now, with free taster sessions set to take place on September 3 and 4 in Darlington and Hartlepool.
