IF you happened to see a man carrying a fridge freezer on his back up Roseberry Topping recently, no your eyes were not deceiving you.

On Saturday, July 16, Sean Alderson completed his biggest challenge yet to raise vital funds for the Neonatal Intensive care unit (NICU) at North Tees Hospital.

It was a cause close to Sean’s heart, as his partner, Claire Francis, delivered her firstborn prematurely and had to spend time in the baby unit as a result.

The Stockton-born dad has deservingly raised around £4,500 for the climb, which took Sean an impressive 35 minutes to complete, from the car park to the very top. That’s a 1,049 feet climb with a fridge freezer on his back!

Sean’s friends and family also took the climb on with him for support.

It was his 17-year-old son, Travis, who spurred him on until the very end when the 45-year-old thought he might not make it.

They celebrated with a well deserved drink at the top.

Sean shared all his training and details on the climb on his Facebook page, to keep everyone up to date.

On discussing the climb, he said: “It was amazing, I just hugged the big white block at the top.”

He added: “When I was about 6/7 metres from the top, I hit a wall and thought my calves were going to explode and my heart felt like it was pumping out of my chest but my son was just behind me and shouted ‘come on dad, you’re nearly there’ and, hearing that, I powered on.”

We asked Sean if he had any plans to complete another fundraiser, he said: “I will definitely be looking to do something again next year but I haven’t yet decided what it will be.”

It’ll be interesting to see what can possibly top this quirky challenge but we look forward to it.
