THE EVIDENCE SHOWS WHY TRUMP MUST FACE JUSTICE FOR REFUSAL TO ACT DURING FAILED COUP

- CHRISTOPHER US Editor

WHILE you guys remain glued to Netflix’s new Bondesque movie The Gray Man, over in the States, the biggest must-watch show has just ended with a blockbuster season finale.

But whereas the streaming giant’s CIA drama is purely fiction, there is nothing fake about this long-running soap opera.

And unlike Ryan Gosling’s spy, the main character of this cliffhanger has yet to make his appearance – he is none other than Donald Trump.

For the past several months, a bipartisan group in Congress has come together to investigate the failed coup to overthrow American democracy on January 6, last year.

The breach of the US Capitol was a remarkable moment in American history. So bad, it almost destroyed its democracy.

The insurrection left five people dead, including a police officer, and more than 100 injured.

With the first ‘season’ now finished, the evidence has been compelling.

Last week it was revealed in detail how Trump refused to do anything to stop the deadly violence escalating, which has led to calls from many that he should face prison.

The committee was told that the former president was aiming to stop or delay the congressional certification of Joe Biden’s election victory by not intervening.

So far, more than 850 people have been charged over the riots, with 99 others already jailed.

Prosecuting the foot soldiers is only partial justice for this grave assault on American democracy.

No matter what your opinion is of the committee investigating the attack, the facts being put before the hearings are disturbing.

The most horrifying came last week in a session over Trump’s conduct as the rioters raged.

Instead of trying to stop his followers’ deadly actions, he chose to sit watching it play out on TV in a dining room in the White House, posting inflammatory tweets and refusing to send help.

He did nothing for some three hours

and seven minutes despite countless calls from his team pleading with him to act.

Most damning was how, despite the mob’s demands for his Vice President Mike Pence to be hanged – with gallows being erected on the Capitol’s lawns – Trump

still would not get involved.

The only thing he said to staff was, “Mike Pence let me down”.

Trump took an oath to defend the Constitution. In doing so, he had a duty as Commander in Chief to protect the Capitol from a mob attacking it in his name.

He refused. Instead, he fuelled the mob’s anger and let the deadly riot play out.

In the 18 months since, Trump has shown not one bit of regret. Rather, the exact opposite.

He continues to tell his followers that the election was stolen from him, despite not one scintilla of evidence supporting his wild conspiracy theories.

They say character is revealed in a crisis. Trump showed he has none.

He stood purposely still when his country needed a leader, proving himself unworthy to be this country’s chief executive again.

The guy should be in a cell, not the Oval Office.
