A TEESSIDE bookshop is representing self-published and independent authors across the world.

The Book Dragon in Stockton, which opened last month, is dedicated to stocking local, national and international works by self-published and independently published authors only.

The shop is owned by author Kirsty McKay and she is supported by her daughter, Bronwyn.

The Middlesbrough-born writer knows first-hand the difficulty of becoming a published author so has dedicated her time to support fellow authors.

Kirsty has published her own books and, like many writers, she knows how difficult it can be to secure a literary agent and gain a traditional publishing contract.

Kirsty explained: “One independent publishing house had already advised me that no matter the strength of an author’s writing or how good their idea is for a story, if it isn’t written to meet the latest trend or find a niche that publishers are looking to fill at that moment in time, then in the majority of cases the dreaded rejection letter comes along.”

On discussing the shop, Kirsty said: “We have a range of children’s and adults books of different genres by some truly talented authors, that is growing on a weekly basis.

“Many of the titles that we stock cannot be purchased in many other

independent bookstores or high street chains, due to the fact that support is extremely limited for selfpublished and independent authors.

“Our customers love the variety of choice, and welcome the opportunity to experience different writers, discovering new and enjoyable reads that without The Book Dragon Store, they may never get to try.

“However, The Book Dragon isn’t simply a bookshop, our business is so much more than this. The shop is only a very small part of what we do, and to give an opportunity for an author to have their voice heard and showcase their work.

“The Book Dragon is the onestop-shop for all aspiring, novice and experienced writers who wish to explore the self-publishing or independent publishing route.

“And whilst I, nor, The Book Dragon can guarantee an author the fame and fortune we all dream and aspire to, I can reassure writers that together with the backing of such a wonderful team, we can provide a supportive network to help them hone and develop their writing craft, and ensure that they never give up doing what they love.”

Kirsty explained where she got the name for the store, she said: “I love dragons and I also love books.

“The Book Dragon if you google search is an actual term and there are lots of images of dragons reading books.

“I think this is a more updated version of the traditional book worm, and who wants to be a worm?”

So far, the shop has had amazing feedback about the premise of the shop and its inviting appearance.

There is a children’s reading nook that has attracted many of the new customers and the artwork on display has convinced locals to pop in just to find out more.

Kirsty and her team at 6 West Row also offer a free book review service for all authors and their book recommendations are enjoyed by readers worldwide.
