Window to close in ‘mad rush’ – Wilder

CHRIS Wilder is expecting a mad rush at the end of the month as what he once again described as the ‘most difficult transfer window’ he’d been involved in comes to an end. And he expects Boro will have to part of that, as they still aim to bolster their squad with five more signings this summer.

Boro have managed to complete six deals this summer despite the slow market, with only six Championship clubs completing more deals so far. But with Boro’s squad undergoing an overhaul this summer as Wilder tries to put his own stamp on things, there is an appreciation all round that more is still needed.

After West Brom, Wilder set the bar at five more new players, with his targets believed to be two strikers, two midfielders and a leftfooted centre-back. Despite cooling interest in Jorgen Strand Larsen this week after disagreeing with Groningen’s valuation, they are close to completing a deal for another striker, with a deal agreed and just logistics to sort now.

While the wait can be a little frustrating, it’s pretty standard right now across not just the Championship but even the Premier League, with the last couple of difficult years impacting clubs financially and this impacting the amount of money to spent, and thus movement all-round. The early start to the season makes business feel slower than usual too.

Assessing the market, Wilder admits he expects to see the usual mad rush in the last week or so, with the window closing on August 31. He said: “I can just see it happening now, there will be a mad rush in the last week and I think we will be involved in that as well. We’d love to get things done, we all would here from the top, through the guys negotiating, through me, through the coaches.

“We’d love to have players in because we are still conditioning them. The likes of Marcus Forss and Chuba, he obviously came into the group late. Players that we will sign, we have to get them up to speed. That is where it’s at. I’ve spoke about it and I think the window should be shut.

“Clubs are still doing stuff and we will still bring players in but I should imagine the managers are in the same situation as what I am in. What I talked about last week, it’s not just the same in the Championship, it is with the Premier League.

“We seem to be dictated to by them which is understandable because they hold all the cards as well and they started the domino effect but there doesn’t seem to be a lot of business happening anyway. For me, it’s by far and away the toughest transfer market I’ve ever worked in.”

While Boro have a recruitment team in place to ease the burden on Wilder with things such as negotiations, Wilder is very much still heavily involved in the recruitment process and keen to point out his role is NOT the more modern one of a head coach at Boro.

In that respect, with such high demands and lofty expectations, he admits it is difficult not to get too caught up in transfer business, thus losing focus on working with the players who are the club.

He noted: “One of the things that I have to be careful with... I’m always talking to myself and I’m that type of person... Another chat with myself is that I don’t get caught up in it because it’s not my whole job to recruit players. I’m part of a group and I’m asked my opinion. I give my view in terms of what is needed from a personality point of view and what type of player we want.

“I’m not a head coach where somebody goes and buys players and we coach them. I think that I am part of that but our biggest talent is preparing that team right for a Saturday afternoon so it’s important that I get the balance right. It’s important that we look after the group that is going down to London this afternoon to try and get three difficult points in a tough division. I need to get my balance right between that and trying to bring players in.”
