Investigations into police attack continue

-

POLICE have issued an update on arrests after five police officers were assaulted in Stockton.

The incident, which took place on High Newham Court in the Hardwick area of Stockton on July 27, occurred when police officers responded to a report of an altercation. After arriving, three officers were punched in the face and mouth, one was punched in the back, and another was kicked.

A 30-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man were arrested on suspicion of affray and assault by beating of an emergency worker, and Cleveland Police has now confirmed the individuals have been released under investigation as enquiries continue.

Three Special Constables and two police officers were assaulted in the ordeal, but nobody suffered serious injuries.

Photos taken from the Stockton road showed a police van alongside two police cars and an ambulance in attendance as people gathered on the streets.

At the time, a spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: “We were called to an incident at a private address off Hardwick Road in

Stockton. We dispatched one ambulance crew but were stood down by the police on scene.”

Cleveland Police Chief Inspector Andy Liddell said: “It’s unacceptable that any of our officers are assaulted, particularly in the line of duty. We won’t tolerate this kind of behaviour and anyone who thinks it’s acceptable to carry out acts like this can fully expect to be arrested and dealt with appropriately.”

Yesterday, a Cleveland Police spokesperson added: “Both arrested were released under investigation whilst enquiries continue.”
