Coulson set for lengthy spell on the sidelines

- By CRAIG JOHNS

HAYDEN Coulson and Aberdeen face an anxious wait to determine the severity of an injury suffered in Saturday’s win over St Mirren.

Middlesbrough loanee Coulson had to be taken off after just 12 minutes of his home debut for the Dons when he was injured in a heavy tackle from Declan

Gallagher, who picked up the first of two yellow cards in just 22 minutes as a result.

Boss Jim Goodwin admitted after the match it looked a bad injury for the 24-year-old, who has potentially damaged ligaments.

That would be a huge blow to the Boro-born left-back, who moved to the Scottish Premiership this summer in an attempt to play more football after a frustrating couple of seasons.

Goodwin said: “I am not going to point the finger at Declan. I have a lot of time for him,and I don’t think there was any malice in it.

“It was a hard tackle which caught Hayden and it looks as though he has done some serious damage to his ligaments, which is a huge blow.”

Coulson was set to be scanned yesterday to reveal the true extent of the injury and how long he will be out for, the Boro man almost certainly facing some time on the sidelines.

It follows similarly frustrating loan spells at Ipswich and Peterborough last term, where injuries also impacted his time there.

There was also bad news for Boro’s other Scottish Premiership loanee in the past week after it was confirmed the pre-season injury Zach Hemming suffered is a groin tear which is likely to see him out of action for two months.

Hemming had rejoined Kilmarnock this summer having played a crucial role in their promotion back to the top flight last year. The goalkeeper has been back at Rockliffe in the past week working on his rehabilitation.
