A HIRING spree is under way for Redcar’s new Regent Cinema. National operator Merlin Cinemas has signed a deal with Redcar and Cleveland Council to take over the £9.6m venue, ending months of uncertainty.

The built cinema is due to open – now it needs a full team, from a general manager to supervisors, chefs, and bar assistants. Roles include assistant managers, 15 bar and cinema assistants, cooks and cleaners.

Incentives include two free cinema tickets each week for staff personal use, or to give to family or friends. They will also receive 40% discount on all items sold in the confectionery kiosk and cafe bar.

All employees are entitled to 28 days annual leave, “taken pro-rata as full weeks for part time” workers. Staff will also be entered into the NEST government pension scheme.

Salaries include £26,000 for the general manager’s role, with assistant managers at £21,000. Chefs can earn £23,000 while supervisors will be on an hourly rate of £10.

Cleaners will earn £9.75 an hour while cinema and bar assistants can earn between £5 and £9.50 an hour based on age.

Merlin Cinemas runs cinemas in coastal towns across the UK. The company says the Regent’s new general manager should have “proven leadership skills in either leisure or hospitality” to manager the operation and “recruit and inspire a new front of house team to help launch and guide the pristine venue into its first important chapter”.

“The Regent has been built to replace the aged Regent Cinema which once stood on the same site for many years,” they said, “the new construction reflects the original cinema’s art decor design, yet with now a modern and contemporary slant.

“Merlin Cinemas is a national operator who specialise in running cinemas with restaurants in coastal or rural towns while becoming the beating heart of the local community.”

The new cinema is has three “high-quality auditoria” – one with conference facilities – all with the “latest digital laser projection and Dolby 7.1 sound”. It also has a first floor cafe-bar and terraced balcony, with panoramic sea views.

Merlin will present the “biggest new film releases seven days a week, along with streamed plays, operas, ballets and concerts”.
