ALI BROWNLEE RUN RETURNS
RUN For All has announced the muchanticipated return of the Ali Brownlee 5k following a three-year hiatus.
The event is part of an extended weekend of running that will also see the return of the Middlesbrough Fun Run and the equally popular Middlesbrough 10K.
The weekend is set to see people of all abilities return to the streets in a carnival celebration of running, fundraising and Northern pride.
Run For All, which is in partnership with Middlesbrough Council and Everyone Active, will kick off the series of events on Friday, September 2, with the Ali Brownlee 5K taking place at 6.30pm.
Those aged 11 and over are encouraged to take part in the activities.
The 5k honours the memory of beloved broadcaster Ali Brownlee, who for over 30 years commentated on his beloved Middlesbrough FC. The event is expected to generate a huge boost for local and national charities, while also providing a great opportunity for those perhaps looking to challenge themselves or simply take part for fun.
Encompassing a new route and with a start and finish in Centre Square, the run will still incorporate Middlesbrough FC Riverside Stadium, whilst offering entrants a new challenge.
Sunday, September 4, will see the return of both the Middlesbrough Fun Run and Middlesbrough 10K.
The Ali Brownlee 5K and Middlesbrough 10K official partner charities include Mind Middlesbrough and Stockton, Daisy Chain, Leo’s, South Cleveland Heart Fund, South Tees Hospitals Charity, The Teesside Family Foundation, Our Hospitals Charity and the Jane Tomlinson Appeal.
Councillor Stephen Hill, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive member for Culture and Communities, said: “The Ali Brownlee 5k is one of the region’s flagship family races, so it’s fantastic to have it back after an enforced break due to the pandemic.
“It’s also a fitting tribute to a true Middlesbrough character and ‘Voice of the Boro’ who is greatly missed by us all.”
Tristan Batley-Kyle, Director of Operations at Run For All, added: “We are delighted to be able to bring back the Ali Brownlee 5K. The race, which is so well received within the local community of Middlesbrough, promises to be a rewarding and enjoyable event for all those involved.”
