A “highly intoxicated” woman bit a police officer so hard he bled and kicked another while she was being restrained.

Hayley Overton, of Petch Close, Middlesbrough, assaulted two police officers after she followed them out the door of her property.

Police had originally visited the home in the early hours of June 25 after reports of two intoxicated females – Overton and another woman.

Teesside Magistrates’ Court heard on Wednesday morning how Overton appeared highly intoxicated and caused damage to her own house while asking police officers to leave.

Prosecutor Lynn Dalton told the bench how the other woman was worried about the defendant’s condition and shared these concerns with police.

When police visited the property again that day for a welfare check, Overton told them she had taken an unknown tablet and then followed them out of the door.

She was arrested for being drunk and disorderly in a public place.

While under arrest, Overton, 36, kicked out at one police officer’s hip and then bit his left forearm so hard it drew blood – he was later put on a round of antibiotics.

Overton was then transported to James Cook University Hospital due to concerns about a suspected overdose. While being restrained in the assessment bay she kicked another officer in his right shin.

The defendant was interviewed following the incident but made no reply to the questions asked.

She later apologised and when asked what she was apologising for, Overton responded “f*** knows”.

The 36-year-old said she was told she had bitten an officer but did not recall the incident.

Andrew Foster, mitigating, told the court it was “quite clear” the defendant was a “vulnerable person who had suffered a traumatic event” at the time.

The chair of the bench sentenced Overton to an 18-month community order with 25 rehabilitation days.

She was also ordered to wear an AAMR, which involves fitting a tag to the offender and monitoring their alcohol consumption for 120 days.

Overton previously pled guilty to one charge of being drunk and disorderly in a public place and two counts of assault by beating of an emergency worker. She must pay a total of £399 to the court which includes a £85 cost, £114 surcharge and £100 each to the affected police officers.
