When can I start planning a walking holiday?

-

At the time of publication, day trips to outdoors locations are permitted but any kind of overnight stay is not. That would seem to apply to wild camping as well – informal ‘roadside’ campers have been fined in the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District.

Things could change on July 4, when – provided various government conditions have been met – accommodation providers may be able to begin reopening. The Prime Minister has said only venues that are

“safe and enforce social distancing” will be permitted to open their doors. Campsites are likely to find social distancing measures easiest to enforce and some have already put forward plans. Sites listed with Cool Camping, for example, will increase cleaning and many will reduce site capacity.

The government is considering introducing an extra bank holiday during October half term, which suggests that it expects to relax restrictions on overnight breaks further by the autumn.

Dreaming of a trip overseas? Although Spain, Italy and France have all announced plans to reopen their borders in the coming weeks, the UK’s quarantine policy might hamper your plans. Travellers will have to self-isolate for two weeks after an overseas trip – although Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has mooted the possibility of ‘air bridges’ which will offer exemptions for countries with similar levels of the virus.
