Lawless littering
Great to see you reporting on The Great Outdoors website (tinyurl.com/y7fwecsk) on the horrendous littering taking place around the country.
I live in the Peak District National Park and witnessed at first hand the situation in Dovedale – I’ve never seen anything like it. It was like some post-apocalyptic lawless state. Truly horrendous.
There have been appalling incidents of wild partying with discarded barbecues, littering, swimming and use of rubber dinghies in the Lathkill River – all in a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
We’ve had many, many moorland fires – some attributable to disposable barbecues. Piles of garbage in Chatsworth Park, piles of garbage and moorland fires at Curbar Edge (where I live), massive fires at Bamford Edge and Dovestones… the list goes on.
Our coverage of the
sad and infuriating epidemic of post-lockdown
littering seems to have struck a chord
with many of our readers and followers – check
out the social media section on this page.
If you’ve seen further examples, or have
thoughts on how it can be tackled, please send
an email to tgo.ed@kelsey.co.uk.
@mazymixer (Twitter): “Normally when I go
up onto Kinder Scout it’s freezing cold and
with little or no visibility. Today’s seven mile
hike with the kids was just glorious.”
@jennyd198 (Twitter): “Social distancing isn’t
hard. You just need to avoid the hotspots. First
hike in 10 weeks [in the Mourne Mountains].”
