The Mezzo 22 is the lightest and lowest-cost pack reviewed. It also has the smallest capacity: 22 litres, which is adequate for three-season day walks as long as your gear isn’t very bulky. As the front pouch has stretch sides and the side pockets are stretchy it can hold more than you’d think, though when stuffed tight it’s not that comfortable. Unusually for such a small pack it has plenty of pockets and compartments for organising your gear – three inner, including the main compartment, and four external. I particularly like the front zipped one, which is good for maps, and the pouch behind it, which is good for waterproofs, hats, and gloves.
The back is quite soft but well padded. The section against the back is open mesh and this is quite breathable. My back gets less sweaty than usual with a body-hugging pack. The shoulder straps are lined with the same mesh. The detachable narrow waist strap is only really needed for extra stability when scrambling or running.
The Mezzo 22 is comfortable and functional. Unless you need more space it’s an excellent daypack for light loads.
