Bonnyrigg & Gore Glen Midlothian SCOTLAND

-

Start/Finish

Bus stop at Waverley Court on Dundas Street, Bonnyrigg

GR: NT311650

From the bus stop, take the

cycleway SW past a former

railway platform towards

Rosewell.

After 3km, follow a sign SE

for Rosewell and cross the

road to enter Whitehill estate.

Walk past the front of Whitehill

House and go through a gate.

At a junction head uphill

to Thornton.

Follow a sign for Capielaw,

but after 20m take a path

into a wood.

A path is marked on the map

going past Parduvine Farm,

but this was ploughed up when we

visited. No problem: continue

following the path in the wood to

come out at a minor road, and

head for Stonefieldhill Farm.

Take the path signposted

to Carrington, keeping R

of the burn when an option

presents itself.

In Carrington, take the first

fork R, up past Carrington

Hill to a wood. Go S through a gate.

Keep a trig point to your left as

you head towards a pond.

8

Cross a stile and contour

round the field boundary

until you can exit to the minor road

near Carrington Mill. Follow the

road to Braidwood Bridge.

Cross the bridge in the

direction of Temple but after

30m, head down to the River

South Esk. Follow the path for

about 3km, all the way to Trotter’s

Bridge in Gore Glen.

Take the road steeply uphill,

cross under a roadbridge,

turn left onto a track following signs

for Butlerfield Industrial Estate,

then after a bend in the track take a

path left into a green lane.

11

When the lane comes out

into open ground, turn R,

and follow the path to a ruined

church (marked on the map).

Cross a stile and head

downhill to the bridge at

Dalhousie Castle. Cross the

bridge, walk past the castle, and

enter an area of woodland on

rising ground above the castle.

After 200m, take a sharp

turn R. Exit the woodland

via a hole in the wall.

Follow the road past

Cockpen Church back

into Bonnyrigg.
