Sculpture is back where it belongs after storm battle
A STATUE that loomed above the waves of a loch until it was carried off by a winter storm has been returned to its rightful home.
Still, the 2.7 metre-tall sculpture didn’t live up to its name when it vanished during high tides and 110mph winds in January.
The artwork, installed by artist Rob Mullholland on the bank of Loch Earn in Perth and Kinross, was missing for several days before it was finally found in a less than ideal state.
Missing part of its head and more than a few of its tiles, it was feared that the work was unsalvageable.
But now after undergoing repairs, the figure has been successfully restored and replaced on its original spot in the loch, where it will hopefully become a permanent feature.
Made from hundreds of mirrored tiles, the sculpture is known locally as Mirror Man and at first glance appears to be solid and imposing.
When viewed from the side it can be seen that many of the tiles appear to be floating away, with Mr Mullholland saying at the time: “I was aiming to capture the strengths and fragility of the human spirit.
“From the front he is strong and imposing, but as you look from a different angle the figure becomes fragile and exposed to the elements.”
The statue is the second work by Mr Mullholland to appear at the site, replacing a series of figures titled Four Seasons.
Both were commissioned by the nearby Four Seasons Hotel, and Still can be found at the East corner of Loch Earn, by the A85.
Hotel owner Andrew Low said: “We are all delighted to see Still back in the water.
“We have missed his presence over the last couple of months and hope that he will remain here for a number of years.
“We would like to thank Rob for firstly creating such a beautiful sculpture and, secondly, taking so much care to repair him after the extreme weather we experienced at the start of the year.”
