Pair to cycle Alps in charity fundraiser

-

A CYCLIST is to take on a gruelling challenge to pedal the equivalent of the height of Mount Everest to raise money for charity.

Nick Gowan, from Glasgow, will attempt the endurance test in the French Alps on July 22 in aid of Alzheimer’s Research UK and was spurred on to begin the fundraising drive after his father, Ken, was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease

The event, called Altitude Challenge, is open to entrants and will see cyclists of all abilities pedal down the mountainside several times in one day, with Nick aiming to complete the journey 20 times.

For an easier challenge, bikers taking part will also opt to complete the distance twice, covering the height of Snowdon or Scafell Pike, or aim for altitudes equivalent to Ben Nevis, Mont Blanc or Kilimanjaro.

Cyclists can pay €30 to enter the event, which includes a barbecue and live music at the end of the day, as well as tickets for a raffle with top prizes including a stay in a five-star hotel.

Mr Gowan explained: “I decided to support Alzheimer’s Research UK because my dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s five years ago, and the disease turned his life upside down.

“He’s just 68 now and in full time care, and the disease has had a big impact on my family, particularly my mum who spent a lot of time caring for him.”
