25 YEARS AGO

The veteran Falklands frigate HMS Plymouth came under fire again last night when shots were fired as she made her way home alongside Plantation Quay in Glasgow. An official of the Warship Preservati­on Trust, which has brought the vessel to Glasgow from Plymouth, said four or five shots appeared to have been fired from the river bank, possibly from an air gun, while the frigate moved up the Clyde.

50 YEARS AGO

Glasgow police said last night that “more than 20 arrests” were made in the area around the Odeon Cinema, Renfield Street, where the Rolling Stones musical group gave two shows. the arrests were for breach of the peace and many of those apprehende­d were juveniles. Ambulance officials said about 150 young persons were treated inside the cinema for hysteria and fainting.

100 YEARS AGO

An official communicat­ion issued at Cairo regarding the operations in the Dardanelle­s states the situation in the Gallipoli Peninsula has developed into trench warfare. After our success on the 4th inst., the Turks have evinced a great respect for our offensive, and by day and night they have to submit to the capture of trenches. In the trench warfare from the 11th to the 13th inst., many of the enemy were killed.

150 YEARS AGO

Greenock: At the Police Court yesterday, a news boy, named Robert Docherty, pleaded guilty to having failed to account for the sale of a number of newspapers sold by him on Saturday last. After it had been explained to the Court Magistrate the case was only brought before the Magistrate to act as a warning to others, the Bailie, after duly admonishin­g the boy, handed him over to his parents, on their promising to chastise him and pay the money due.
