On course for a route into work
Studying at University of the West of Scotland offers first step on career path
INNOVATIVE programmes of study designed to meet the demands of existing and developing industries are being offered by the University of the West of Scotland (UWS).
For entry this September there are a limited number of places still available for fulltime undergraduate study in business, computing, science, engineering, and creative industries.
In the Business School, the university’s BA Marketing degree was voted top marketing course in Scotland for student satisfaction in the 2013 National Student Survey, with 100 per cent of survey respondents stating that they were satisfied overall with their course.
The specialist marketing modules taught are complemented by arange of core business modules to underpin the marketing knowledge students gain. Economics, accounting, human resource management and law help to provide students with the necessary skills required to excel in a career in the increasingly competitive field of marketing.
Students enjoy the opportunity to work and study abroad as part of the course, and UWS is the UK’s only university in the DukeNet European network, enabling students to participate and collaborate in the annual international Markstrat strategy competition.
The university works in close consultation with industry and professional bodies to design, develop and deliver its courses.
Its BSc (Hons) Environmental Health course, which has a few places remaining for the September start, recently received full accreditation from the Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland (REHIS) highlighting the quality of the degree. This accreditation recognises that the degree meets rigorous professional, as well as aca- demic standards. Another popular option is the BA in Human Resource Management (HRM), which is the only undergraduate HR course in Scotland with Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) approval. The course provides students with the skills and knowledge to operate successfully in a professional capacity in HRM, playing a key role in the performance of 21st century organisations.
A new option is the university’s BA Technical Theatre degree – the first of its kind in Scotland. The course, aimed at those with appropriate HND or equivalent qualifications, will be delivered at the university’s £81 million Ayr Campus, which has some of the country’s finest recording, broadcasting and performance facilities. The degree will offer a thorough vocational training for those who wish to work in theatre stage management and technical theatre production. In partnership with the Gaiety Theatre in Ayr, students will also gain experience in a live theatre environment and have a forum to showcase their work.

The programme, which reflects the ever-changing nature of business and the global challenges that business leaders are facing, focuses on developing strategic analytical skills as well as business intuition and enquiring and adaptive thinking.
The MBA is available on a part-time and full-time basis at the university’s Hamilton Campus. It has been structured and designed to allow students, through the selection of option modules, to focus in one of three areas: finance; leadership; or enterprise. This allows students to align their MBA studies to their current career, or career aspirations. A competitive funding package has been developed for the course, and details are available at www.uws.ac.uk/MBA.
Another new course is MSc Smart Networks which is unique in Scotland and is designed to meet the increasing business requirements of modern enterprises.
