25 YEARS AGO The Catholic Church yesterday repeated its stern opposition to plans to set up an interdenominational school in the East End of Glasgow because of falling school roles. In what is described as an unusual step, the head of Glasgow’s Roman Catholic community, Archbishop Thomas Winning, has written to parishioners in the Cranhill area outlining his growing concern about the implications for Catholic education provision in the area. 50 YEARS AGO The Vietcong struck again at Saigon last night only hours after their surprise attack on an air base had killed eight persons, wounded 128, and destroyed or damaged about 30 aircraft. Their latest targets were two police stations in the city in which nine persons were reported wounded. A U.S. ground force found the site today from which two Vietcong mortars and a recoilless gun made the attack on the Tan Son Nhut air base. 100 YEARS AGO Fines amounting in all to £230 were yesterday inflicted upon munition workers who took part in the recent strikes at Parkhead and Dalmuir. The cases, of which there were about sixty, came before a General Munitions Tribunal held in the County Buildings, Glasgow. A number of the respondents submitted medical certificates showing that they were off work owing to indisposition, and in these cases the charges were withdrawn. 150 YEARS AGO For a considerable time past the police have been daily receiving information of hand-bags having been snatched out of the hands of ladies while passing along the streets in the neighbourhood of the Cross, London Street, &c. Last night, while passing down Saltmarket, a lady got her hand-bag dragged violently out of her hand by a thief, who immediately ran down one of the many closes in that locality.
