Woman’s body recovered after car plunges into River Clyde
THE body of a woman has been recovered from a car that plunged into the River Clyde.
A major rescue operation was launched by emergency services to reach the trapped woman at around 1.20pm yesterday.
It is understood a 4x4 vehicle, travelling at speed, bypassed several speed bumps before it smashed through a barrier, a fence and landed in the river.
The vehicle, with only one occupant, clipped two cars before breaching the metal fence and entering the water, according to a small crowd at the scene.
Emergency services including officers from Police Scotland, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and HM Coastguard raced to the scene at Renfrew’s Ferry Village following the incident.
A large area of the housing estate was cordoned off by police.
Police divers searched the water and recovered a woman’s body from the vehicle.
A post mortem examination will take place in due course to establish the cause of death.
Inquiries are continuing to establish the circumstances of how the vehicle came to enter the River Clyde. The incident happened close to Clyde View Park which is popular with local children.
The housing estate is also close to Braehead shopping centre, and it is understood several cars were damaged close to the scene of the car.
Locals spoke of their shock following the incident.
Witnesses claimed the car was travelling erratically before it plunged into the river.
Plumber William McCluskey, 41, said: “I flew to the window and saw a guy who was shouting that a woman had just banged into a car and gone right into the River Clyde.”
