25 YEARS AGO Four people were killed and 22 were injured last night when two trains collided head-on on a stretch of track opened recently in Cambuslang. Firemen freed passengers from the wreckage while powerful electric wires were still live.

The commuter trains collided outside Newton Station just before 10pm on a stretch of track opened three weeks ago after work on a new junction. 50 YEARS AGO Captain G.F.Ellis, jr. and the 1100man crew of the American Polaris submarine tender Simon Lake were greeted with brilliant sunshine when the ship arrived yesterday in the Holy Loch after a 10-day Atlantic voyage from Charleston, South Carolina. The Simon Lake will next month become depot ship to the 14th Submarine Squadron in place of the Hunley which has been on station with the “Highland Squadron,” as it is known, since January, 1963. 100 YEARS AGO Hundreds of roach are being found floating dead in the Forth and Clyde Canal in the Wyndford district.

The fish weigh from a quarter of a pound up to a pound and a half, and are invariably covered with insects. They come to the surface to die.

One reason advanced for the heavy mortality is the stoppage of traffic on the canal, the churning up of the water enabling the roach to clean themselves from vermin. 150 YEARS AGO Coatbridge -Yesterday there was a great turn out of the members of Free Gardeners, representing the Greenhouse, Thistle, and Olive Lodges.

In their procession through the town, they were accompanied by the Airdrie Saxo-Horn, Drumpellier, and Bo’ness Instrumental Bands.

There was a great display of flowers. Large crowds were collected to witness the procession, which numbered about 200.
