Lord Provost advised to keep photography tips to himself

NOW you look strangely familiar...

This was Dr Michael Kelly, Lord Provost of Glasgow, who in March 1984 opened this very paper’s annual exhibition of staff photographers’ work, at the Theatre Royal in Glasgow.

After opening the event, Dr Kelly was presented with a framed cartoon of himself, the work of Jim Turnbull, the paper’s superb cartoonist.

Dr Kelly then presented to Herald staff photographer Ian Hossack the Lord Provost’s Trophy for the best photograph at the exhibition, which went under the title of A Year in Focus.

Fittingly, the photograph you see here was taken by Ian himself.

Our files show that in January 1982, when Dr Kelly had also performed the honours, he said jocularly: “I am photographed virtually every day and I pick up a lot of useful tips from photographers. In turn, I suggest certain angles and tips to photographers, but these are usually rejected.”

Fast-forward to April 1989, and that year’s exhibition of Herald staff photographers’ handiwork at the Theatre Royal.

The Lord Provost of Glasgow by this time was Susan Baird. And to whom did she present the trophy for the best portfolio?

Ian Hossack, of course.
