25 YEARS AGO The Lord Advocate’s decision not to bring criminal charges against Occidental over the Piper Alpha disaster was greeted with anger yesterday. Relatives of some of the 167 victims who died in the world’s worst offshore disaster three years ago claimed the decision was disgraceful. They said Occidental had pulled out of the North Sea simply to escape prosecution. 50 YEARS AGO Details of the modernisation of Central and Queen Street railway stations, which will cost more than £1m., are announced by British Railways. When Buchanan Street station closes on November 7, these two stations will handle all trains in and out of Glasgow. Three-quarters of the money is being spent on Queen Street-£450,000 on improving passenger and staff facilities and £300,000 on modernising technical equipment. 100 YEARS AGO The restrictions which have been made applicable to the North of Scotland special military area were putintooperationinGlasgowlast night. All persons desiring to travel to places within the restricted area were required to produce their permits before military authorities before they were allowed to travel by the ten o’clock train from Buchanan Street Station last night for Inverness and the North. 150 YEARS AGO On Friday, in North Street, the Messrs. Jas. Henderson & Co. exhibited a most ingeniously constructed carriage, just completed, which forms part of an order for India. It has a fourwheeled under-carriage, light and handsome, ornamented with silver, and beautifully painted crimson lake, with open body, gorgeously lined with white in the French fashion, and a surmounting and moveable hood in front and square cover in rear. Within four years between two and three hundred vehicles have been forwarded to India.
