Police begin new lines of inquiry after TV appeal over OAP killing
POLICE say they have had an encouraging response to a nationwide television appeal on Crimewatch to help them catch the killer of a pensioner mysteriously murdered in his home.
Officers appealed for help on the BBC1 programme on Monday night to track down the person responsible for killing Brian McKandie at his remote bungalow in Badenscoth.
The 67-year-old, who lived in the semi-detached property near Rothienorman, Aberdeenshire, was found dead on March 12 in the house in which he had lived most of his life.
Mr McKandie’s brother, Bill, also made an emotional re-appeal for information to find answers about what happened to the handyman.
He said: “We just can’t put our finger on the reason for it happening – there seems to be no apparent reason.
“Somebody, somewhere knows what happened.
“It’s easier to come forward and tell the police or you’ve got to keep that secret for ever.”
Police dealt with several calls from the public following the programme and officers say this has given them “a number of lines of inquiry” to follow.
Detective Chief Inspector Iain Smith, who is leading the investigation, said a dedicated team was investigating the murder with the help of specialist officers.
He said: “I can only hope the programme will encourage people to come forward to assist us in determining the full circumstances of Brian’s death, and I would like to thank those who have made contact already.
“As our investigation continues into Brian’s death it is crucial we build a picture of his life and acquaintances.
“If you are aware of anyone who would have been in his company, or know of anyone who was in contact with him, please let us know and we can quickly check as to whether we have spoken to them.”
Police are seeking more information on a boxy red or burgundy estate car seen at the pensioner’s address on the day that he died, shortly after he returned home from a bank in Turriff.
