25 YEARS AGO Thousands of protesters backed by miners armed with clubs and petrol bombs manned barricades in Bucharest last night and demanded Romanian President Ion Iliescu’s resignatio­n.

In a third day of angry and at times violent protests at high prices and low pay, streets leading to University Square were barricaded. Gangs of youths turned back cars on the broad boulevards and demanded petrol for Molotov cocktails. 50 YEARS AGO The first move in what is hoped to be the regenerati­on of the Blackhill housing scheme in Glasgow was made yesterday by a corporatio­n property management sub-committee.

They authorised the city factor to appoint two supervisor­s to be permanentl­y in the area, and they agreed to investigat­e the possibilit­y of a crash programme being carried out to bring the houses in Blackhill up to modern standards. 100 YEARS AGO The concerts of the Society of St Vincent de Paul are always enthusiast­ically supported, and last night found the Glasgow St Andrew’s Hall almost completely filled. The poor are with us in war as in peace, and where there are poor there is work for the St Vincent de Paul Society.

Last night’s programme informed us that during the year ending March 31, 1916, the number of families relieved was 3080, comprising 11,064 persons. 150 YEARS AGO Greenock-Yesterday afternoon a small screw steamer of 12 tons register came down the river from Dumbarton, where it had been built by Messrs. Denny Bros, and was, during the afternoon, shipped on board the Liverpool and Glasgow steamer Penguin, which sailed for Liverpool last night.

The little vessel is 38 feet long, 8 feet broad, and 4 feet deep, and is to be transhippe­d at Liverpool for Rio de Janeiro.
