25 YEARS AGO Urgent moves to save and enhance the Clyde salmon runs are under way after the Herald report of illegal fishing in the River Kelvin, just a cast away from Glasgow city centre. A public meeting is being called to propose forming an angling club to tackle formidable problems in river and fish management caused by the return of the salmon, let alone that of poachers. Friends of the River Kelvin conservation society is in talks with the Clyde Fisheries Management Trust. 50 YEARS AGO Mr Tommy Walker has resigned as manager and secretary of the Heart of Midlothian Football Club after 35 years’ service with the club as player and manager. Mr Walker, who was awarded the O.B.E. in 1960 for his services to football, was a distinguished player, having been capped 25 times and a distinguished manager (he took Hearts to a Scottish Cup, two league titles, and four Scottish League Cup victories between 1954 and 1962). 100 YEARS AGO In an interview granted to an American journalist, Mr Lloyd George definitely declares the Allies’ intention to fight to a finish. No mediation with a view to peace will be tolerated from America, the Vatican, or any neutral Power. Any such action will be regarded as an unneutral and pro German act. After enumerating the changes wrought by time in the war situation, Mr Lloyd George stated that France and Russia were equally determined to go on to the end. 150 YEARS AGO It will be seen from our advertising columns that a meeting of master blacksmiths has been held with the view of raising the price of horse shoeing and other jobbing. The rise was found necessary in consequence of the increase in men’s wages and value of material. We understand that a similar movement has been made in Glasgow, Greenock, Dumbarton, and other places. The rise takes place on the 1st of October.
