25 YEARS AGO Scotland will be forced into at least one change for their next Five Nations’ Championship match against Ireland on February 15. Injury will Rule Sean Lineen out of the Lansdowne Road game quite apart from whatever renovations the selectors may decree after the 25-7 defeat by England in the Calcutta Cup match at Murrayfield on Saturday. Lineen sprung a rib cartilage during the second half. 50 YEARS AGO The Northburn Steelworks at Coatbridge of Bairds and Scottish Steel, Ltd., are to be closed on February 17 and 440 workers and 25 staff will today receive redundancy notices. At Clydebank, about 90 men of different trades will receive notices at Babcock and Wilcox, Ltd., the first phase of what may total about 300 dismissals in the next three months. 100 YEARS AGO A party of about 100 wounded soldiers from Stobhill Military Hospital were entertained to dinner yesterday afternoon in the Royal Restaurant, West Nile Street, by the patrons and staff of the restaurant. After dinner a musical programme was submitted. An entertainment organised by Mr Harry F. Ashton, manager of the Theatre Royal was given. The programme proved very successful, the soldiers being particularly pleased with the rendering of the popular pantomime songs. 150 YEARS AGO Rothesay - A large number of boats were engaged in trawling for herrings near Colintraive on Monday night, when one of their number had his nets quite filled, which caused those who were not so fortunate to commence pilfering from their more successful neighbour’s nets, when a regular scuffle took place, in which oars and other weapons were used somewhat freely. During this melee the Cygnet, tender to H.M.S. Jackal, under the command of Mr Spellirs, made her appearance among them.
