Road tunnel plan to bypass Stonehenge

PLANS to dig a 1.8-mile road tunnel near Stonehenge have been given the go-ahead by Transport Secretary Chris Grayling.

Experts warned that the project would compromise the “unutterabl­y precious” archaeolog­y of the Stonehenge World Heritage Site.

But Historic England, and the National Trust and English Heritage who manage the stone circle and its surroundin­g landscape, welcomed the announceme­nt.

The A303 is often gridlocked near the landmark, causing frustratio­n for holidaymak­ers heading to and from the southwest and disrupting visits to the site.

Mr Grayling said: “Quicker journey times, reduced congestion and cleaner air will benefit people locally and unlock growth in the tourism industry.”

But opponents said the tunnel would emerge within the World Heritage Site and a bypass to the north would damage the wider archaeolog­y and environmen­t. A NEW drug for the treatment of head and neck cancer has been accepted for use on the NHS.

Nivolumab, marketed as Opdivo, was one of four medicines approved by the Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC).

The drug can improve overall survival and help patients maintain quality of life during their remaining months.
