Scot’s US charity bike run cut short by car as cyclist hurt six months ago dies

John Telfer was badly injured cycling in Spain. A FATHER on a charity cycle across America is in hospital with serious injuries after being hit by a car.

Alan Corsie’s 3,000 charity ride was cut short less than 500 miles from his destination by the accident between Mariana and Tallahassee in Florida on November 11.

He suffered two broken ankles and a collapsed lung in the accident and is being treated in intensive care at Tallahassee Hospital. It is hoped he will be moved to a rehab facility for three weeks before he can fly home.

Mr Corsie, 55, from Aberdeen, was doing the trip to raise money for Alzheimer Scotland as his mother has been diagnosed with dementia.

On his Facebook page on November 12, the father-ofthree wrote: “Well for me, the cycle is over. I got hit by a car from behind yesterday, and didn’t know anything about it until waking up in ICU. Both ankles broken and a collapsed lung. Give me my sore bum and knee anytime!”

It emerged yesterday another cyclist, who broke his neck in a crash in Spain six months ago, has died.

The family of John Telfer, from East Calder in West Lothian, paid tribute to the lecturer, saying he had been “doing something he loved”.

Mr Telfer was injured in an accident on the road to Pedreguer from Alcalali in May. He was then flown back to Scotland with a spinal injury after £25,000 was raised through crowdfunding.

Gregg Telfer, Mr Telfer’s son, posted on Facebook: “It was my father’s choice to not accept further ventilation due to complications and, although the last six months have been the most testing that any family should have to go through, we are still grateful and proud of his character, determination and attitude from sustaining the initial injuries, through attempted recovery periods, until his passing.”

Mr Corsie’s family, meanwhile, said they had been overwhelmed by support since his accident.

His daughter Ellen, 20, said: “He’s in high spirits and is on the road to recovery.

She added: “It’s been overwhelming the amount of messages we have received and donations.”
