506 prime hoggs fetch up to £115 each

FARMING MESSRS Craig Wilson Ltd had 506 prime hoggs forward at Ayr yesterday that sold to a top of £115 per head and 227p per kg to average 169p (-9p on the week).

The firm also had 13 pens of three prime Suffolk lambs forward at their annual show held in conjunctio­n with the West and Central Scotland Suffolk Sheep Club.

The championsh­ip was awarded to A Mcmillan, Burnbank Farm, Dalrymple for the second year in a row, for a pen that weighed 44kg each and went on to sell for £139 per head.

The Reserve ticket was won by Mr A Hunter, Laigh Langcraig (Craigie) that went on to fetch £128. The show lambs averaged 267.3p per kg (+13.6p on the year).

There were also 301 other prime lambs not entered in the show that sold to £142 and 304.8p to average 261.8p (+10p on the week).

Cast sheep were harder to cash on the week with 263 heavy ewes selling to £137.50 for a Charollais and averaging £84.47, while light/export-type ewes peaked at £71.50 for Blackfaces and levelled at £57.41.

Harrison & Hetheringt­on Ltd sold 37 prime heifers in St Boswells yesterday to a top of 275p per kg and averaged 234p (+3p), while 19 prime bullocks peaked at 254p and levelled at 232p (+5p).

In the rough ring 33 beef cows sold to 181p and averaged 234p (+3p).

A small, end-of-season show of 149 prime hoggs sold to £127 and 221p to average 184p (+11p), while 836 prime lambs peaked at £147 and 282p to level at 262p (-30p).

The 303 cast sheep forward saw heavy ewes sell to £145 for Texel crosses and average £105, while light ewes peaked at £71 for Cheviots and levelled at £60.

The firm also sold nine prime heifers in Carlisle yesterday to a top of 242.5p and an average of 204.3p (+5.6p), while 30 prime, beef-bred bullocks peaked at 236.5p and levelled at 212.5p (+2.5p).

Five prime, dairy-bred bullocks sold to 171.5p and averaged 168.9p (+13.4p).

Forty-one prime, beefbred bulls sold to 238.5p and averaged 198.7p (+5.5p), while 35 prime, dairy-bred bulls peaked at 182.5p and levelled at 156.2p (-3.9p).

In the rough ring 151 beef cows sold to 214.5p and averaged 152.6p (+0.7p), while 170 dairy cows peaked at 172.5p and levelled at 120.9p (+2.6p). Nine bulls sold to 157.5p and averaged 130.7p (-17.7p).

There were also 176 prime hoggs forward that sold to £94.80 and 212p to average172­p (-6.9p), while 641 prime lambs peaked at £150.80 and 317,4p to level at 265p (-4.8p).

A nice show of 240 heavy cast ewes sold to £126.50 for a Suffolk and averaged £87.55, while 40 light ewes peaked at £72.50 for Swaledales and levelled at £48.37.
