Six people are injured after bus collides with tram
SIX people were injured, one critically, when a bus collided with a tram near Edinburgh Airport.
The tram was leaving the airport for the city centre when it derailed yesterday following a collision with a single-decker airport bus.
Scottish Ambulance crews said that four people were taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, including the bus driver.
The tram appeared to have jackknifed at the scene and there were reports that the bus was knocked on to its side.
Police said a driver and a ticket conductor from the tram were treated at the scene and their injuries were not thought to be serious.
The ambulance service said a further three individuals were discharged from the scene without having to go to hospital.
It was not clear last night whether the three received treatment for injuries.
The condition of the bus driver is not yet known and it is believed, but not yet confirmed, that pedestrians were among the injured.
Tram services between the Gyle Shopping Centre and the airport were stopped in the wake of the crash at about 5.30pm. Motorists also reported chaos on roads in and around the transport hub.
The bus was being used to carry passengers between the long-stay airport car parks and the terminal building.
A Scottish Ambulance spokesman said: “Multiple ambulance crews were dispatched to treat patients on scene, including our Medic One trauma team and Special Operations Response Team.”
A spokesman for Edinburgh Trams said it was working closely with Police Scotland officers to investigate the cause of the incident.
He said: “Following the recent road traffic accident, our services will continue to operate between York Place and Gyle Centre for the remainder of this evening.
“Early investigations would suggest a bus struck the side of a tram causing it to de-rail. We continue to work closely with Police Scotland on their investigation and have offered our full co-operation.
“We will be working with our maintenance staff throughout the night to recover our vehicle as quickly and as safely as possible.”
He added: “We aim to provide an update at 4am on tomorrow’s services.”
