Is there no end in sight – they’ve even taken my star sign

- ALAN SIMPSON

DURING these unprecedented times and four months of lockdown, the one thing we are all looking for is a return to some sort of normality and some things getting back to the way they’ve always been.

There is only so much turmoil that we can all take after all and at times like these we look to the brightest brains on the planet to offer some reassurance.

But instead highly paid boffins at NASA have thrown everything into complete chaos by ‘discovering’ a 13th star sign called Ophiuchus.

I suppose scientists are just like everyone else and have had to find things to help get them through the day. Not for them basic tasks like cleaning the oven or baking, they instead throw the entire astrological chart into a cocked hat. Just because they can I suppose.

What all this really means is currently unclear, but for me I have lost the star sign that I have had since I was born.

I am no longer a Scorpio apparently, but I am now a Libra instead. This is not quite the sting in the tail I’d been expecting after a lifetime of being a Scorpion.

I don’t even know what a Libra is or what symbol I am now meant to look for in my horoscope. It’s all very discombobulating, which itself may become another star sign in the near future if the NASA scientists aren’t allowed back to work soon and they can concentrate on rockets again.

All this life changing stuff seems to be catching too as we emerge slowly from lockdown as thousands of Scots appear to have made the decision to discover the delights of their own back yard for the first time.

Clearly fuelled by our daily walks, many have now started to climb Munros, wild camp on beaches and other traditional delights that pre-lockdown were only really enjoyed by a minority, whose noses are now out of joint.

Now everyone sees to be doing it as millions re-emerge from hibernation and social media is awash with some of the most beautiful and peaceful parts of the country festooned with tents at the weekend.

Visitscotland has just launched a major campaign aimed at getting Scots out to help revive the battered tourism industry.

But judging by the scenes of last weekend it appears to be money badly spent as Scots don’t really need much encouragement now that the constraints are lifted. Just remember and take your litter home as being a rookie is no excuse for leaving your filth behind.
