Kelly keen for home comforts in Paisley

- MARK GUIDI AND ALASDAIR FRASER

SEAN KELLY, the St Mirren defender, has been frustrated by his side’s poor home form this season but hopes to bring about an improvement when Ross County visit Paisley this afternoon. The Highland side sit bottom of the SPFL Premiership at the moment but might find encouragement today in the faltering performances of their hosts, with St Mirren having scored just one goal on their own patch in this campaign and losing five on the trot in front of their own fans.

The struggles endured by St Mirren at home have also become a common theme whenever a player is put up for press conferences and Kelly is eager to change the tone of such conversations. Winning this afternoon would be enough to do that, although he is aware that his side cannot afford to take three points for granted against the league’s bottom side.

“We lost last week at home to Inverness,” said the Scotland Under-21 defender. “We should have made the extra man count and the disappointing aspect was we didn’t work their keeper enough. We had a lot of the ball as you’d expect against 10 men but we just didn’t do enough with it. We should still be doing more to create more chances.

“We recently beat Partick Thistle and St Johnstone away and drew up at Aberdeen. We just need to concentrate on getting our first win at home.”

There are those who will step out at St Mirren Park and allow their minds to wander, though, with Graham Carey returning to the club where he became a League Cup winner in March last year. However, the County winger has acknowledged that he will have to improve his performances if he is to add further happy memories of matches involving St Mirren.

“Funnily enough, the last few times I’ve faced St Mirren I don’t feel I’ve really played that well for one reason or another,” he said. “I seem to kind of let myself down against them but maybe that’s tied up with the fact I was there in the past. I need to move on from that.”
