CURLING

nOlympic silver medallist David Murdoch tumbled out of The Masters in Selkirk, Manitoba, last night following a depressing 7-2 defeat to Swiss skip Peter de Cruz. The double world champion from Lockerbie needed to win to have any hope of reaching the quarter-finals, but he promptly conceded two stones to de Cruz at the opening end. Murdoch dug in to trail only 3-2 after four ends, but the fifth proved fatal as the Geneva player counted four stones there to finish the contest and bring the Scot’s tournament to an early end. Another former world champion, Eve Muirhead, is in serious danger of missing out on a place in the Masters quarter-finals after suffering a third straight defeat. The Perth skip faced a world final rematch with Margaretha Sigfridsson, but this time the result was very different as the Swede led 2-0 and 4-1 before easing to a 7-3 victory after only seven ends. Muirhead is the only player yet to win a match in Selkirk, and her next chance to get off the mark comes against Saskatoon’s Sherry Anderson. nEdinburgh’s Gina Aitken made a dream start at the Junior Superspiel in Ottawa yesterday, winning her opening two matches convincingly. The Scottish junior champion began by defeating local skip Emma Wallingford 8-5 and followed that last night with an even more impressive 10-3 victory over Ontario’s Molly Greenwood.
