Stage set for Rahm after claiming ‘stunning’ first PGA tour title

SPANIARD Jon Rahm claimed his first PGA Tour title in stunning style with victory at the Farmers Insurance Open.

The 22-year-old (pictured) is tipped for big things in the game and gave a glimpse of the future as he fired a sevenunder-par 65 to finish three shots clear on 13 under.

The back nine was where he did the damage, sinking two eagles, the second of which was a 60-yard putt on the 18th, to help him come home in just 30 strokes.

The maiden win was made even more special as his father was at Torrey Pines to watch.

“My dad hasn’t really been here for anything. He was at home working. So to have him here right now is such a special moment. I am so happy,” he said. “My mum isn’t here but she is probably at home crying.

“It does a lot for me. I get to play the Players Championship. I am likely going to the FedEx Cup. I am going to the majors. It is amazing.

“I really don’t know how it is going to work. I will have to look at my schedule.

Rahm finished above Charles Howell III and CT Pan, who took a share of second on 10 under, while Olympic champion Justin Rose, who led after the first two rounds, was one of four players to finish on nine under.

Rose went round in 70, with four birdies and two bogeys, but it was not enough for him to stay in contention. He said: “I actually felt I played well today – that could easily have been a 66. “Jon Rahm closed the door prett y firmly coming in but even after the birdie at 16 I felt I had a chance if I went birdie-birdie. “It was enough to win today. Another good week for me and I just want to keep this momentum up.”
