WHO ATE ALL THE PIES?

Sutton’s stand-in goalkeeper enjoys non-league club’s big night out

-

Arsenal may have made heavy weather of overcoming a spirited Sutton side at a packed Gander Green Lane to reach the FA Cup sixth round but their performance was in sharp contrast to stand-in United goalkeeper Wayne Shaw who made short work of a steak pie.

Shaw (inset) demolished his tasty treat inside the Sutton dugout as he surveyed the fifth-round encounter where Arsenal, having been thrashed at Bayern Munich in the Champions League last week, booked their place in the last eight despite struggling to polish off their hosts in similar fashion.

With pressure mounting on Arsene Wenger, the Frenchman needed to avoid the largest of banana skins against their non-league hosts, and goals from Lucas Perez and Theo Walcott set up a tie against another non-league outfit, Lincoln, at the Emirates Stadium.

The visitors went ahead when Granit Xhaka’s raking pass found Perez on the flank. The 28-year-old cut inside to arrow a low drive past the despairing dive of Ross Worner in the Sutton goal.

After the break, Walcott hit the killer second, finishing at the far post for his 100th Arsenal goal.

Sutton’s moment to remember almost came with a little over half an hour to go as former Arsenal man, Roarie Deacon, rattled the bar from 25 yards while Jamie Collins almost scored from a header that sent David Ospinna sprawling (left).
