Inverness’ play caught my eye, says Storey

MILES STOREY is convinced John Robertson is recreating the John Hughes style of play that propelled Caley Thistle into Europe.

Past manager Hughes took the team built by Terry Butcher to great things with a Scottish Cup final triumph and Europa League qualification after a record third-place finish in the Premiership.

Storey, who returned to Inverness last week, first joined the club on-loan from Paolo Di Canio’s Swindon Town for season 2015-16.

The 25-year-old’s fortunes dipped at Pittodrie and then Partick Thistle, but after release this summer and trials in England he eventually set his heart on a return to the Highlands.

Storey, who sprang from the bench to hit the winner against Arbroath, said: “One of the main reasons I looked at coming back was the way Caley Thistle play.

“We played them a few times when I was at Partick last year and I noticed the type of football they played wasn‘t too dissimilar to when I was here before.

“After speaking to the manager and the assistant, it was a place I wanted to come and have another shot.

“You’re going to get chances wherever you play in the front line of this team. Hopefully, when I get my confidence up, I can start slotting them away regularly.”

Storey, though, is taking it a game at a time and focusing on his new club’s promotion aspirations.

After netting with a tremendous strike on his second home debut, he said: “We showed a lot of qualities but it was probably tighter than it needed to be. We had a few chances in the first half when we should have scored.

“After watching it, when I came on I felt I had to try to exploit them down the sides. I knew I was eventually going to be pushed out to the lefthand side which I quite like.

“I thought if I got a chance I would have a dig and luckily the ball moved a fair bit and went in.”
