Waghorn’s positive report sold King on Ibrox move

-

ANDY KING jumped at the chance to join Steven Gerrard’s team after getting the low-down on life at Ibrox from former Rangers striker Martyn Waghorn, pictured.

The midfielder put pen to paper on a season-long loan deal on Thursday and got his first experience of the home crowd as he watched his new club side beat Midtjylland in the Europa League third qualifying round.

And he is delighted to make the move north of the border after leaving Leicester City to become Gerrard’s 10th summer signing.

King said: “It was my first taste of it but I have heard a lot about it.

“I am good friends with Martyn Waghorn and I played with him for a couple of years, so he told me what a great atmosphere it was. A lot of people since I have joined have said they want to come up and experience the atmosphere. It is famous and it didn’t disappoint.

“He [Waghorn] played at Leicester when he was younger so we were there together for a couple of seasons. He actually lived with me for a while when he first joined so we are good friends.

“When I heard about the interest, I messaged him straight away and asked what I could expect and he only had good things to say, real positive things. When a club like Rangers comes in for you, it makes your decision and makes your mind up. I can’t wait to get started.

“Once you hear Rangers is an option, it is ‘right, that is where I want to go’ and you try and get it done. The size of the club and the manager, obviously, being a midfielder and someone I have watched for many years and the way he played the game.

Hopefully I can learn from him.

“[There’s] the chance to play in European competition as well. I can’t wait to get going.”
