Shved returns to Glasgow from Ukraine duty with ankle injury
CELTIC new boy Marian Shved has been sent home from international duty with Ukraine after injuring his ankle in training.
The £2m signing from Karpaty Lviv has been used extremely sparingly by Neil Lennon since he returned in the summer from a loan spell at his former club.
He’s made just one substitute’s appearance in a Champions League qualifier in Estonia where he scored his first goal for the club against Nomme Kalju.
Despite his lack of appearances for the Parkhead side, Ukraine manager Andriy Shevchenko called him up for their Euro 2020 qualifier in Lithuania and the friendly against Nigeria.
However, the 22-year-old been sent back to Scotland after injuring his ankle. The Ukrainian FA stated: “Unfortunately, Marian Shved has returned to his club after suffering an ankle injury and will not travel to Lithuania.”
Last month, Lennon revealed he expects Shved to make a bigger impact once he adapts to his new surroundings. The Celtic manager said: “He’s a little bit frustrated, he just needs to up his tempo and his work. It’s still, again, an adaptation period for him. He’s young, in a new country and doesn’t speak great English. So, we know we’ve got a good player on our hands and we’ll see more of him as the season progresses.”
Meanwhile, AIK have announced they have extended their investigation into alleged racist abuse hurled at Celtic star Boli Bolingoli after last week’s Europa League clash.
The Scottish champions cruised to a 4-1 win in Sweden, but the victory was marred by the abuse from the home fans after the defender celebrated Celtic’s fourth goal, before both sets of fans clashed at the end of the game.
Celtic vowed to probe the abuse after the game and stated: “We are investigating this matter fully.”
And although the racist abuse was not referred to UEFA, AIK have vowed to take action after launching an investigation of their own.
AIK stadium safety officer Jens Andersson said: “We have done a full internal investigation as to what has or has not happened with relation to this incident.
“There are still people we want to interview who have been away, so we are extending it.”
