McGregor worries over ring rust

BOXING

LEE McGREGOR fears ring rustiness could be his most dangerous opponent when he eventually returns to action.

The 23-year-old Edinburgh boxer was due to fight on May 2 in Glasgow on the Josh Taylor undercard but that bill has fallen to the coronavirus pandemic.

McGregor last fought on November 16 when he beat fellow Scot Kash Farooq with a controversial split decision to add the British bantamweight title to his Commonwealth belt and take his record to an impressive 8-0.

However, he is now worried that the momentum taken from that victory could dissipate during the lay-off.

“One hundred per cent, that’s my big concern,” he said. “That’s why I am trying my best to stay on it, stay training, stay sharp. But there is nothing like the real thing, getting in the ring and fighting, and if you are not doing that, it is really tough.

“I had the momentum, everything was going well. I was planning on hopefully challenging for European titles this year and now, by the time I get in the ring again, it possibly will be a year down the line from my last fight and it’s a scary thought.

“Do you go right into a big fight after however long it is going to be, be rusty and lose a fight that you could potentially win? It is tough, that is why I have a good team around me who will do what’s best for me.

“All I can do is stay disciplined, stay on it and keep my training going. And fingers crossed we get through this and everything is back to normal as soon as possible.”
