‘SPFL needs to take lead from USA on commissioner’

- IAIN COLLIN

LACHLAN CAMERON is convinced Scotland should follow the lead of American sport and appoint a ‘commissioner’ to run football in the country.

The Ayr United chairman admits the move, which would copy the way American football, baseball, basketball, ice hockey and soccer operates in the United States, would benefit the game as a whole.

The figure, who would be elected into office by the clubs, would have total control of the decisionmaking process.

Cameron admits the change would not stop the current ‘bickering’ over the right way forward for the sport, but he believes removing power from the clubs would be a good thing.

He said: “I’ve got the experience of looking at American sports and of looking at football in Scotland.

“And, to be honest, sometimes I think there’s too much power within each club [becasuse of] the voting structure.

“I would have the clubs vote a representative, a commissioner, who would make decisions for the benefit of Scottish football.

“It wouldn’t decrease the amount of bickering and arguing about what was happening, but at least things would actually happen.

“You could put it in the charge of the commissioner and he or she could make the decisions.

“And then the clubs have the right to vote that person out the next time the election comes up.

“But you would have one person in power and one person making the decisions, for the benefit of Scottish football as a whole.”
