SRU play down talk of London ‘festival’
THE SRU has played down a suggestion that
Scotland’s outstanding Six Nations game with Wales will be held at Twickenham in October, pointing out that several sizeable obstacles would have to be overcome before any such agreement could be reached.
An English newspaper reported that an eightmatch ‘festival of rugby’ would be held at the
London venue, kicking off with the Wales-Scotland match on 31 October and ending on 5 December. It estimated that a crowd of 40,000 would be able watch each game at Twickenham.
However, a spokesperson for the SRU stressed that nothing was set in stone at present, and that it might be the end of the month before agreement could be reached on both the outstanding Six Nations matches and a replacement for the Autumn Tests.
“Scottish Rugby don’t really have a position on this at the moment given that nothing has been firmly established yet,” the spokesperson said.
“There is a World Rugby meeting in the next week to look at the issue, but no guarantee that a definitive decision will be possible at that point. We are hopeful that everything will be sorted out for an announcement by the end of the month.”
The spokesperson reiterated that Scottish
Rugby is currently planning towards a worst-case scenario of no crowds being permitted during the Autumn international window and is committed to working closely with the Scottish Government through the process of relaxing restrictions.
