Lennon taps old pal Petrov for info on Ferencvaros

NEIL LENNON has enlisted the help of former Celtic teammate Stiliyan Petrov as a spy ahead of Wednesday evening’s Champions League qualifier against Ferencvaros.

Petrov has a connection to the Hungarian champions through a friend on the coaching staff, and Lennon has been picking the brain of the former Celtic midfielder to get the lowdown on his side’s opponents in their second oneoff tie, as they attempt to reach the group stages for the first time in three seasons.

“I know it is a tricky tie against Ferencvaros who were excellent against Djurgardens,” Lennon said. “It’s a great game to look forward to and I’m very excited.

“I watched snippets of it but we will watch it more in depth on Monday. They are a good side and I was speaking to Stiliyan Petrov about them last night and they are quite a strong team, particularly away from home.

“They are difficult to break down and good on the counterattack. We are under no illusions that it will be a tricky tie, a very tricky tie.

“Stiliyan was giving me a few wee titbits on players and how they will play.”

Meanwhile, NSI Runavik manager Glenn Stahl insists the Faroe Island minnows will spare no expense in their bid to stun Aberdeen.

Ongoing travel restrictions due to the impact of Covid-19 have forced the Betrideildin outfit to charter a flight to Scotland, shelling out “enormous money” in the process.

The Swedish coach said: “We need to hire a plane to Scotland due to the pandemic, which will be enormous money for a tiny club. That is the only way to play the game.

“However, the club has supported us and we will do all we can to maximise our chances of winning the match.

“We arrive in Scotland with nothing to lose and everything to gain, as Aberdeen are such huge favourites.”
