Wright backs Arsenal loanee to go far

- DARREN JOHNSTONE

KILMARNOCK manager Tommy Wright insists Zech Medley will go far in the game after being delighted with his start to Scottish football.

The on-loan Arsenal defender scored his first ever professional goal as the Rugby Park side came from behind to rescue a draw with Dundee United.

And even though Wright admits the 20-year-old’s desire to play out from the back gave him a few scares against United, the Northern Irishman has been pleased with the youngster’s progress.

Wright said: “He’s a great kid and someone you can see who has a lot of quality.

“He gave me a heart attack a couple of times when he sometimes tries to overplay a little bit but in that system we don’t just want them to sit in.

“We want them to go and join in and he probably just has to tidy up his decision making a little bit.

“But I’ve really been impressed with him, a lovely lad, a lovely lad to work and someone who has a big future in the game.”

DUNDEE winger Declan McDaid will not be returning to Firhill on loan after all after the Championship club cancelled an agreement following a series of eye-catching displays of late for James McPake’s side.

The 25-year-old came through the youth ranks at Morton before moving to Partick Thistle, where he spent four years before leaving for Ayr United in 2017, where he worked under current Thistle boss Ian McCall.

McDaid had been set to rejoin the Jags on loan for the remainder of the campaign once the lower leagues got the green light to resume from the Scottish Government, with Thistle announcing on 29 January that a deal to bring the midfielder on loan had been struck after Blair Spittal returned to his parent club, Ross County.

Since then, however, McDaid has broken into the starting line-up at Dens Park and looked lively out wide – prompting the Championship club to cancel the loan agreement for the left-sided midfielder.

A statement on Dundee’s website read: “The club can confirm that Declan McDaid will remain at the Kilmac Stadium and will not join Partick Thistle on loan.

“A loan deal was announced in January, subject to the lower leagues returning, but after impressing in training and recent matches the decision has been made that Declan will stay with Dundee.”
